Tuesday 8th October 2013 ~ The New Look X2

Yes the X2 takes the headlines today, with newly repainted 37568 out on the road after a quick safety service. Our man Syd Eade was out and about and caught up with 568 as she prepared to work her first duty, the 14.55 to Norwich this afternoon :

Here she comes, 568 pulls into Lowestoft bus station from Gasworks Road depot.

Geminis have worked on the X2 before of course, but only on an occasional basis and this stopped once Lowestoft lost their allocation. Here 37568 begins its first spin in its new paint scheme. Photographs copyright : Syd Eade.

Meanwhile, yet another B9, 37563 has left King's Lynn for repainting at Full Circle. 37566 & 37571/2/3/4 were still active on the X1 today. During the day, only two diagrams passed through Wisbech notably late. 37573 on L10-XL16 10.48 to Peterborough left at 11.07 and K15-XL02 with 33815 due away at 13.28 was 24 minutes late departing.
Damon Powell has spent a few days in the area sampling the X1 and here is his report and a selection of photographs :

"I’ve just got back after a weekend in the area sampling the new order of the X1 – very very impressed by what I experienced. I’ve not seen Enviro 400’s presented to such a high standard before, and the blue and gold livery especially suits them well. It’s a shame that adverts will shortly be applied to them though – it’ll somewhat undermine the smart appearance.

Wi-Fi is pretty reliable across most of the route – I was using my laptop most of the way – and quite fast too; and the air-con was very much appreciated on Monday once it got a bit warmer! The leather seats are comfortable and not too hard either, and I can confirm they’re comfortable enough to have a snooze on the boring bits of the A47!

The next stop announcements are useful, but there are a few faults with this system… It gets a little confused at various places, and the computer also can’t pronounce Swaffham! (Swarf-ham, anyone?) It’s quite ineffective on the all stops section around Dereham and Toftwood too and because there are two calls for each stop, we were well past some stops before it had finished announcing quite a few times.

My only other small gripe is with the destination screens… Is there really any need to have the ‘calling at’ and ‘then’ wording on the intermediate screen? I understand where First are going with it, but the lettering could be so much bolder and clearer if it wasn’t for that – and I’ve simulated what that would look like below!

Apart from those two little things - which I’m sure will be ironed out once things settle down - I’ve got nothing but good things to say about the buses, and the team who make it all happen. Keep up the good work! Oh, and, I reckon that should a human voice be provided for the next stop system, Gerard should be behind the mic…!"

On Saturday night, 37573 is at Norwich with K14-XL01 19.35 Yarmouth - Peterborough. I guess I will work out what happened on Saturday night sooner or later !

Monday October 7th 2013 ~ Thirteen - Lucky for Some

Thirteen new Enviros were on the road today, with just 33803 (water ingress and servicing) and 33804 (safety service) not on the road. 33423 was also in traffic on K3-XL09 again. The remaining diagrams were B9s as follows : K18-XL05 37571, K19-XL06 37574, K6-XL12 37573, Y9-XL15 37572 and Y13-XL19 37569 to King's Lynn for 37566 forward. 
A couple of corrections now from the weekend. On Saturday 37569 on K18-XL05 came into King's Lynn just after 14.00 and was turned round to work L12-XL18 back to Lowestoft, a result of 37573 being delayed near Wisbech. K18 didn't run to Peterborough, but 37573 took over the turn as the 17.16 to Lowestoft. So 37569 began the day on K18, then found itself on L12 and finished the day as L8 21.35 to Lowestoft, here it is on the latter arriving from the garage at King's Lynn bus station :

On Sunday 37573 came back from Yarmouth on XL08- Y8 07.51 from Gorleston and was taken off at King's Lynn and replaced by 33812. It was then spare until utilised to work XL02-K2 after 33811 failed at Guyhirn at 15.30.
Back to today then and a successful day for the new fleet with timekeeping much improved on a week ago. 33814/5/6/8 were all out for the first time without incident. Wisbech was gridlocked at 13.30 after an accident on the A17 between Sutton Bridge and Lynn meant traffic was diverted through the town. This coincided with temporary traffic lights on Lynn Road  and 33816 on K15-XL02 departed for Peterborough 24 late.

 There were no new Enviro deliveries today, but five more are due this week with the remaining two next week. Leaving the area was 37570 which went off to Full Circle for repainting. 
Speaking of repainting, here we have some hot off the press pictures courtesy of James and Syd of 37568 which was delivered to Lowestoft depot this afternoon. Looking very smart in its new designated X2 livery, this is the first of the B9s to be released in a new colour scheme. 568 is due a safety service tomorrow and should be on the road from Wednesday. For the record, 37568's final mileage after use on the X1 was just under 561,000 miles.

Now we have mentioned lately the pros and cons of advertising on buses and today saw the first Enviro on the road sporting adverts. These were applied at Lowestoft yesterday and the bus concerned is 33805. Being fairly moderately coloured, in my opinion they don't look too bad, but certainly garish yellows and reds would not do much for the colour co-ordination.

Sunday dawned with the following seven Geminis still available for X1 work : 37566/69/71/72/73/74/77. Of these, 37571/77 were out on the route today plus later 37573 which had to take over from an ailing 33811 on XL02 diagram (16.05 Peterborough - Yarmouth). 33811 was also in trouble late last night when it failed at Guyhirn on K14-XL01. The problems are believed to be oil filter related. Timekeeping today otherwise was very good.

I've had another report, this time from Tony Powell who had a day out yesterday, he writes "Bob and I came to Lynn yesterday for one of our occasional lunch-time meetings. A Gemini (37574) on the 11.05 from Peterborough to Lynn gave a more-or-less on-time journey for what was almost certainly my last Excel Gemini experience. 

Return was on the 15.20 to Peterborough. This produced Enviro 33808 and another on-time journey. and  our first chance to try one out. Overall very impressed, seats much more comfortable than the Geminis (even the B7s were more comfortable than the B9s in my view)  Air-Chill effective, if a trifle noisy) but no other major problems. 

I had expected to find the on-board stopping announcements irritating but this was not the case. They were not intrusive and generally very accurate (except for leaving Lynn  when, after passing the Railway Station, the system correctly gave the next stop as London Road, Southgates. The bus of course turns right after the Raiway Station and so must confuse the system so that the next stop information was changed to Railway Station again  But a curiosity rather than a problem.

One thing that I did not expect to like was the route information along both sides of the bus at the bottom of the upper-deck windows. This unnecessarily restricts downward vision from the window seat. As someone who enjoys looking out of windows can I start a campaign to get this removed? 

I note that the new buses have external advert frames, just like the Geminis. Has one received any ads yet?  I dread to think what that will do to the new image. In this context I would mention that Stagecoach, with their comparable "Gold" brand, do not fit external ad frames to their dedicated vehicles. In other words, the integrity of the brand is protected".

Thanks for that Tony. The new buses are expected to receive adverts within the next few days, just as soon as studs to allow this are fitted. Applying adverts to branded buses has always been controversial - I know a number of people at First who are disappointed that this is still going to be the case with the Enviros, but official word is that advertising on such a high profile route raises an income which is too huge to ignore. Take into account that in the slightly less than five years that the Gemini B9s have reigned, they have carried T side adverts - that's just the driver's side - for 197 different major campaigns, quite apart from the supersides and the smaller rear ads.

Saturday 5th October 2013 ~ A Tale of Three Geminis

Syd Eade, a regular contributor to this blog writes " I had my first experience of the announcements on board 33808 this afternoon. I was pleased that they were quite refined and not overpoweringly loud. There were a couple of mistakes though as the GPS cannot work out which way the bus is going. The first announcement after leaving Lowestoft Bus Station came almost immediately in Katwijk Way and was an incorrect 'We are approaching Lowestoft Bus Station'  The next stops were all called correctly but on arriving at Tesco we had a correct 'We are approaching Tesco and Pleasurewood Hills',  however after calling, then proceeding by turning at the round-a-bout to return to the A12, the same announcement was made again at the same point as inbound. After that, all went to plan and the system performed faultlessly. The boarding passengers can regularly be heard voicing their approval of the buses and how smart they are, I can't remember that reaction with the B9s, the odd comment maybe but this is almost every passenger coming up the stairs! 

I took a few photos during the day at Gt Yarmouth and have sent them in case they are of interest...after all one of the buses may be having its last day on X1 ! In a change from the bright low sun, today was dull and misty.....you cant please a photographer, but at least it wasn't cold or windy (blessings duly counted)". 

Well Syd has a point and as they are such good pictures, I've included them all here. I wonder how many Geminis will feature next Saturday ?

33423 was back on its old regular turn, K3-XL09 and is seen here heading westbound on the 13.47 departure.

Enviro 400 no. 33804 was working K5-XL11 today and is due for servicing on Monday, so will not be out on Sunday.

Possibly the rogue B9, 37566 heads for Lowestoft working the 10.05 from Peterborough. Might turn out to be its X1 swansong ? See report below.

33808 which Syd arrived on was working diagram K1-XL07 today. This is now the shortest X1 turn on a Saturday as in the evening it terminates at Lynn rather than Great Yarmouth. 33808 has been a solid performer this week.

37572 arriving on the 13.30 Lowestoft (14.17 Yarmouth) - Peterborough, K4-XL10.

33809 has also had a good week and was working K2-XL08 which should garage at Lowestoft tonight.

After sterling work over the past five years, today was the last day on the Peterborough route for 37579. See below.

The ratio of Enviros (including 33423)  to B9s today was 11 to 8. The Geminis are now being withdrawn from the X1 at an increasing rate and 37563/4/7 were stopped today and the intention was to do the same with 37569/579. K18-XL05 began the day with 37569, but this was taken off this afternoon and I'm not sure which bus took over. This evening 37579 was due to come off L8-XL14 at 21.30 for 37566 which had come in on Y7-XL13 to go forward, however, 37566 failed (almost predictable I would say) and instead 37569 had a reprieve and took over from 37579.

A shortage of Excel drivers saw controller David Fields bring in 37579 to King's Lynn garage on an X1 for the last time tonight.

Timekeeping today was pretty poor in the middle of the day. A vigil with Bruce from 13.10 - 14.15 saw the following services pass : 

Westbound 

XL02 K15 33812 4 late (pictured above) 

XL03 K16 33810 13 late

XL04 K17 33813 3 late

Eastbound

XL17 Y11 33807 21 late

XL19 Y13 37571 9 late

The missing bus was 37573 on L12-XL18 which became stuck in traffic after an accident at Nettle Bank between Wisbech and Guyhirn and which finally passed Bruce at 14.34, 59 minutes late. 

Enviros 33814/5/6/8 were at Vancouver Avenue this evening and it is hoped they may be OK for traffic on Monday.

Friday October 4th 2013 ~ Whatever happened to .......?

Whatever happened to Enviro 33817 ? The reason I ask is that today's two newly delivered examples  for the X1 were 33816 reg YX63 LKE and 33818 YX63 LKG. It doesn't take a genius to work out the reg of the missing bus does it ? Then again could be wrong, after all I tipped 33817 to arrive !
Today eleven Enviros were in service with just one casualty, 33803 threw a wobbly at Dereham at 15.40 while working K4-XL10 13.30 Lowestoft - Peterborough. A serious air con fluid leak meaning an engineer had to attend to coax the bus back to Lynn. A Gemini replaced it. The star of the new girls at the moment is 33810 which has now run 2100 miles. Earlier loan Enviro 33423 was again in action and worked K2-XL08 Lynn - Peterborough - Lowestoft - Peterborough and back to Lynn where a Gemini (37579 I think) took the service forward to the coast at 18.46. K14-XL01 & K15-XL02 managed to swap vehicles at some stage today, 33805 became K15 and 33812 K14.
Today's Gemini news was that of the departure of 37578 to Full Circle for repainting. 37568/75/76/78 are now present there with 568 due for release imminently.
Whilst on the subject of the B9s, 37575 has the distinction of accumulating the most miles on the X1 during its tenure on the route. Its final tally was 583,512 miles. Now some fun number crunching came up with an absolutely staggering fact. 37575 was in service for 1780 days and if you divide this by the mileage, you find that 575 on average travelled 327 miles every single day for almost five years !!! Quite amazing I'm sure you will agree and a fine advert for the B9 Geminis.
37572 which was 575's nearest rival on the Gemini front is still working on the route, so might possibly overtake this figure.

Thursday October 3rd 2013 ~ A Better Day

The question I asked yesterday about punctuality and the Enviros appears to have been answered today. XL01-K14 had 33810 all day and this is the first time that this very long bus duty (it starts at 05.20 and ends at 00.29) has been entrusted to a single vehicle. On previous days a swap had taken place at lunchtime. K15-XL02 had 33808 which did come off at 12.50 for 37573 to work forward to Peterborough. The problem, if indeed there was one, must have been minor as 30808 was later able to resume the diagram at 15.41 to Lowestoft.
 K16 saw the first day in use for 33813 and this ran to time this afternoon. Likewise K17-XL04 had 33805 running almost on time and this too worked all day.
Other Enviro workings today were K1-XL07 33811, K3-XL09 33806, K4-XL08 33804 and K5-XL09 with 33812. All these ran pretty near to time.
An accident involving a couple of cars closed the B198 near Walton Highway at about 12.00 and the road was not reopened until late afternoon. X1 services ran via the A47 bypass at this time, but Y9-XL15 was heavily delayed reports Paul Bennett. It departed Lynn 30 late and passengers were told they would have to change buses at Norwich so that 33809 could go light to Lowestoft to make up time. 33809 passed me at Wisbech at 12.02, about 12 late but was then spotted by Bruce on Pullover Road at 12.49 with 37574 just 3 minutes behind it.
Paul continues "37574 eventually caught up 33809 at Dereham ,so passengers changed onto the Gemini there". The other Enviro out today hitherto not mentioned was 33807 on L8-XL14. This came off at Lynn this evening for 37566 (off Y7) to work forward at 19.01 to Peterborough.
The reason for the Enviro swaps yesterday was attention to the air conditioning systems and tomorrow could be similar with technicians due to be at King's Lynn to make some amendments to the on board announcements (triggered by GPS), attend to the wi-fi set up where necessary and to make adjustments to the vinyls featuring the main calling points of the service. 33803/6/7/9/10/13 all require some or all of these modifications.
New deliveries recommenced today with the arrival of 33814 (YX63 LKC) and 33815 (YX63 LKD) and two more, 33816 & 33817 are coming tomorrow (Friday). Richard hopes to have all 15 ready for traffic by the middle of next week. On the Gemini front, 37570 & 37578 were in the garage today undergoing maintenance but these have now both been laid off from X1 use. 33423 was also sent to the compound this evening where it joined 37157 awaiting repairs, 37565 awaiting MOT, 37567 & 37573 spare and the day's two new arrivals.

Wednesday October 2nd 2013 ~ Like for Like

After today, it has still not been possible to establish whether the Enviro 400s can keep to schedule on the route. This is because all but one turn had vehicle swaps, presumably for work to be carried out, but also possibly in some part  due to late running.
The changing of vehicles started early on. K1-XL07 had 33809 on the first section from Lynn to Peterborough and back, then 33806 took over for the 08.31 to Lowestoft. This was only 5 late when it came back through Wisbech to work the 15.58 to Peterborough. K2-XL08 was another early change, 33805 doing the first bit, then 33807 taking over at 09.01 to Lowestoft. This was 6 late this afternoon, so neither of these turns lost much time on the Lynn - Lowestoft - Wisbech run.
33423 worked K3-XL09 once again and K4-XL10 had 33803 all day - the only Enviro to stick to diagram, it was about 15 late through Walpole at teatime heading for Peterborough.
 Turns K5 - Y13 (XL11 - 19) inclusive were all the old order with Geminis 37572/74/73/79/69/77/67/64 & 71. Only Y9-XL15 ran out of course, 37569 being 17 late out of Wisbech on the 10.18 Peterborough, it was 11 late coming back.
The early afternoon turns ran as follows

I can only think this was because of late running. An Enviro was seen arriving at King's Lynn South Gates from Lowestoft  at 12.47, so it is unclear whether it was K14 running 37 late, or K15 7 late.

37570 was sent down to the temporary compound for storage this evening, but 37578 has appeared back at Vancouver Avenue and is over no. 1 pit this evening. There were no new deliveries of Enviros today after all and just two more are scheduled for tomorrow. 33813 is now at Vancouver Avenue for rectification work.

Tuesday 1st October 2013 ~ An Evolving Story

There were no new deliveries of Enviro 400s yesterday and today, but a couple are expected tomorrow I am told. Meantime Richard and his team at King's Lynn continued remedial work on some of the new arrivals today.
There were 8 Enviros out on the road today : 33804/5/7/8/9/10/11/12. Of these 33812 was having its first day on the road and Syd Eade was out with his camera again to capture it in service.

Two more views from Syd of 33812 on arrival at Gorleston James Paget Hospital. Syd says "Couldn't resist a ride on its first day out".

The only slightly worrying aspect of the new fleet is its ability to keep time. Yesterday only one (33809) managed to regain any lost time and today only 33808 was running to timetable after a round trip from Peterborough - Lowestoft. This is more than likely due to vehicle familiarisation, enquiries from passengers and the like. A similar thing happened when the Geminis arrived.
It is not known what time K14-XL01 arrived back in King's Lynn at lunchtime after yesterday's debacle, but 33807 was replaced by 37566. The latter was running spot on time as were ten out of eleven B9s seen today.
One surprise was the appearance of 33423 back on K3-XL09 today, called upon once again until more Enviros become available.

Monday 30th September 2013 ~ The Big Day

A day like this one only happens every five years or so, so I hope you'll excuse the enthusiasm here ! Shortly after 05.00 this morning the first two new Enviro 400s to work in passenger service departed from Vancouver Avenue garage to King's Lynn bus station, one bound for Lowestoft (33805) and the other for Peterborough (33809). These were followed by a further seven Enviros with Geminis 37563/574/579 making up the numbers.

With the start of a new timetable and all the interest amongst passengers and staff with the new liveried buses, it is hardly surprising that timekeeping was very hit and miss. Early on though punctuality was pretty good. The initial Enviro to Peterborough returned eastbound through Wisbech 15 late and subsequent services were 33806 (K2-XL08) 2 late, 33811 (K3-XL09) 3 late, 33803 (K4-XL10) 1 early and 33810 (K5-XL11) 2 early. 37563 on the Swaffham - Peterborough ran 7 late, but came back a minute early so clearly no problems with the new timetable at the western end. There was a problem this morning with 37564 which shut down near Blofield on Y9-XL15. Fitters attended and the bus was able to continue. 37577 on L10-XL16 left Wisbech 13 late for Peterborough and was 8 late returning, while 37572 on Y13-XL19 left promptly at 12.18 westbound as scheduled. After this, there is now a 40 minute gap in the service and Bruce and myself patiently waited for K14-XL01, the first returning service from Lowestoft. 33805 eventually appeared 26 late at 13.08 and then proceeded to lose more time as it picked up a double load of passengers. Tracking the service, it was 32 late from Wisbech and returned into the town 46 late at 15.15. The final sighting of it was coming in from Peterborough at the South Gates at 15.48, about 49 late. This bus is now booked to work the last through service from Yarmouth - Peterborough in the evening, but instead a Gemini was substituted at Lynn (37569). Not surprisingly, K15-XL02 was very close behind with 33808 and this bus ran light from Peterborough - King's Lynn to try and make up some time. There was a problem with 33803 working K4-XL10 just after departure on the 16.45 to Peterborough and 33805 which found itself spare after coming off K14-XL01 was sent out to Nar Ouse Way to replace it. The problem with 33803 was a minor one, although there were some defects which became apparent with a few of the Enviros as the day wore on. Air conditioning fluid leaks in the drivers cabs were a particular concern. K2-XL08 had 33806 replaced by 37571 about 18.30, but a few more B9 Geminis were taken off the road today, 37565/578 being two and 37575 went to Full Circle for repainting, It has now been decided that as the B9s become available they will be sent to Yarmouth/Lowestoft in the current Excel livery and then will be repainted as time permits. Of the Enviros not used today, 33812 needs its ticket machine wiring installing and 33813 has a few defects (unlucky 13 and all that) and may not be on the road for a while yet. It is thought that a further 4 or may be 5 Enviros will arrive this week, with the balance next week.
So of course you have all been out with your cameras ! I have been sent a huge number of shots and please don't be disappointed if I have not used all that have been sent. Your generosity is very much appreciated. Let's see how the day went.....
